🧋🚲 Cyprus’ hospitality sector shares much in common with that of other western countries, like Germany and the US. Most workers are marginalised and unorganised. The labour laws and collective agreements (where they exist) covering the sector are not being enforced, and worker rights are constantly being violated. If the workers want a seat at the table, they must organise and fight for it.
🎥And these two documentaries have such stories to share!
🎬18:30 – The courier driver business | DW Documentary (Eng Subs, 44min)
🤔What does the courier “business” in Cyprus share with Germany (and a growing number of other EU countries)?
🔎The documentary uncovers a system of exploitation that is becoming increasingly widespread in German cities: thousands of young migrants come to the country for worthless degrees at expensive private universities. They are lured here by agencies and heavily in debt, as a result. Once in Germany, they are ripped off by unscrupulous landlords and end up working for entrepreneurs who exploit them: with bogus employment contracts, forced illegal work, and pay far below the minimum wage. “Fun” fact? This system originated in Cyprus!
🎬20:00 – Partners (2025) | Working Films (Greek Subs, 40min)
✊The inside story of an unparalleled labour revolution!
💪The film shares the true story of how a small group of baristas announced their intention to form a labour union; and how Starbucks responds with an elaborate and illegal anti-union campaign. Featuring on-the-ground footage from workers and organisers, Partners takes us to the front lines of the historic union campaign that catalysed America’s Gen Z labour revival.
