On May 1st 2026, 140 years since the original May Day, Wobblies from all over Cyprus gathered at the Çetinkaya Soccer field in the buffer zone to celebrate the struggles of the international worker movement!

Along with fellow workers from the anarchist movement of the island, we set up a table of material, distributed our texts to the Turkish-speaking workforce of the north, and gave a strong message that there is an alternative to the complacent and failing model approach of the traditional trade unions!

This was followed with an event at a nearby park, a gathering place for the migrant workforce of the capital, where we shared short presentations of the most important recent labour struggles in the south and the north.

As the international statement of our organisation says, “(t)he idea that workers have no country, that we are workers of the world, is written into the DNA of May Day”. True to this idea, and against all those who wish us divided, workers from all over the island, native and migrant, Cypriot, Greek and Turkish, came together, talked, danced, sang and laughed together once more on this day of celebration, remembrance, and, most importantly, commitment. The commitment to continue to stand by each other, stand up for our rights, stand tall and stand firm against the current all-out assault of the capitalist system!

Until the wage system is abolished, an Injury to One is an Injury to All!
