Four years in Darkness

Earthquake Afghanistan

Four years after the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, conditions are becoming increasingly difficult for the people of Afghanistan. The leader of the Taliban group, Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada, is putting the people in a difficult situation with new decrees. After the group came to power, their first action was to prohibit Afghan girls and women from going to work, schools, and universities.

One of the problems facing Afghan girls is that they are forced into marriage by the Taliban leaders. Five months ago, local sources in Tiyara County, Ghor Province, told the media that a girl named Abida set herself on fire in the village of “Darzab Nili” in this county after a Taliban member tried to force her to marry her brother. On the other hand, Afghan girls are being whipped by members of this group for wearing the hijab, or the burqa.

Over time, under the pretext of insufficient budget to pay the salaries of government employees, the leader of this group has ordered that appointments in all government departments be reduced by 20 percent. This is while many times men in the family have committed suicide despite not being able to provide for their families. Last year, the leader of this group issued a decree reducing the salary of all female employees in government departments to five thousand AFN, equivalent to 64 euros.

Recently, Mullah Halatullah Akhundzada, the leader of the Taliban group, issued a new decree cutting off people’s access to fiber-optic internet in the northern provinces of the country, and this decree includes all provinces, including the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul.

With this deplorable situation in Afghanistan, the countries of Iran and Pakistan have also deported millions of Afghan families to Afghanistan, which was a humanitarian disaster for the people of Afghanistan because the ruling government did not have sufficient funds to manage this humanitarian disaster, and with the help of international organizations and the honorable people of Afghanistan, they were able to contain this disaster. After that, on August 31, 2025, around midnight, a severe earthquake shook the provinces of Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar, Kabul and Kapisa, killing more than two thousand people. As I mentioned before, the ruling government is not capable of managing such natural disasters and calamities, and this is the reason why the death toll has risen to an unprecedented level. The ruling government did not have access to some mountainous areas for days after the earthquake, and the people themselves treated their wounded and dug mass graves to bury their families.

After the earthquake, a woman from Kunar province asked to be treated by a female doctor, but due to the lack of female doctors, she died after a few days. However, educational and training centers are still closed to Afghan girls.

In this situation, the flight of scientific, educational, and human resources, especially the young generation, as well as Afghan women and girls, continues.
