Seed of (Un)Happiness – another horror story in the catering sector

A few days ago we received the following two terrifying testimonies from former employees of Seed of Happiness (bakery & cafeteria in Nicosia), which we publish with every reservation:

The employers of Seed of Happiness give anything but happiness to their employees. During the 7 months I worked there, I saw and experienced the abusive behaviour of the employer firsthand. I saw 6 people leave, either voluntarily or due to forced resignation from the supposed «artisan-bakery», as they could no longer stand the abominable behaviour of one of the two bosses, with the second employer showing selective ignorance of the behaviours of the first.

Daily insults, outbursts and shouting from the employer are an experience of every employee in this business that wants to promote «high frequencies» («High Vibrational»). The said employer demanded from each employee to comply with her mood and unreasonable demands, you never knew what could happen. I witnessed racist, Islamophobic and fat-phobic behaviours on her part.

Furthermore, the exploitation of workers from “third countries” is the way this particular company survives to this day. They are working  9-hour shifts, 6 days a week, for very little money. This brings their total hours to 54, with the maximum legal limit that someone can work per week in the catering sector being 48. It should be noted that they are never paid for their overtime. This, combined with the racist treatment they are receiving from their employers, made the everyday life of all of us extremely difficult.

Some examples of the abusive behaviour of employers are the following: a Muslim employee wanted 5 minutes of her 9-hour shift for prayer. Even the fact that her break lasts a full hour was not enough to convince the employer that there would be no problem if she took 5 minutes for her prayer. On the contrary, threats and insults that she would prohibit any exercise of religion and faith in her store were what followed, while at the same time she started discussions about zodiac signs and astrological charts. Offensive comments about Muslim families who passed by the store were normalised. Comments to another employee to start a diet were repeated on a weekly basis, while the requirement that another employee take medication to stop her period pains and work was not unreasonable for the employer. Shouting and swearing at the employees but also at a store associate, in front of customers, by the employer is the working environment of this store that otherwise wants to promote a refined culture. While all this was happening, the employees had to serve the customers with a smile, ignoring the abuse and psychological manipulation that the bosses inflict on them.

This text aims to show the reality of this particular store and to protect anyone who might consider working there, but also to show those employers who have these or similar behaviours, that they are not and will never be tolerated.

“I quit because of the abusive and unfair treatment I received while working there. After waiting for many days to receive my final payment, I realised that they did not pay me the full amount. When i tried to tell them about it through messages they brushed me off and gaslit me, but the worst happened when I went to the bakery to demand my wages in person. One of the bosses acted abusively, she tried to grab my hand, she called me asshole and other names, she accused me that I owed them money and not them. The other employer also joined, he didn’t want to talk, he just opened the door and told me to get out. During the whole time the first boss was shouting and accusing me and saying bad things. I went outside to the street, when she barged out and threatened that she will drag me to court because I am falsely accusing them, and again called me asshole and bitch. That’s when I decided to meet with the IWW to have this sorted out.”

The testimonies of our fellow workers did not leave us indifferent as an organisation. In the first stage, we proceeded to demand the due accrued wages, initially by email and then by sending a small delegation to the store itself, where we met with one of the employers (the other employer made sure to hide in the kitchen). Three days after our visit, the company paid the accrued wages to the employee.

But the issue does not end with a few days’ wages. We stand in solidarity with those who experience abuse in their workplaces, and we stand against any form of employment that demands the soul, body and spirit of workers for a piece of bread. Hence, it is our duty to publish such testimonies, which reveal the labour reality for the majority of workers in the country, and especially of those whom governments and legislation have made sure to leave unprotected in the clutches of employers.

Afghanistan is not a safe country! (En & Ελ)

On February 21, dozens of migrants and refugees from Afghanistan traveled from all around Cyprus to the centre of Nicosia, to participate along with their fellow workers (native and migrant) in our event regarding the history and current situation of their home country.

    Event for Afghanistan Feb2026 (2)

The insightful and moving presentation was augmented by the amazing traditional food cooked on the spot, enjoyed by those participants who were not observing Ramadan.

    Event for Afghanistan Feb2026 (4)

However, what haunted the event and dominated the discussion preceding and following the presentation, was the abhorrent situation with the mass rejection of asylum petitions of Afghan refugees by the Cypriot government – a situation that we first brought to light back in the summer of 2025.

    Event for Afghanistan Feb2026 (3)

If one thing was made clear by the presentation of our member from Afghanistan, is that the Taliban regime established five years ago has no respect of human and worker rights, and that the country should not be considered safe for repatriations by any means.

    Event for Afghanistan Feb2026 (5)

The IWW in Cyprus once again pledges its support to the struggle of the now hundreds refugees whose asylum applications have been rejected. As it has been our motto for over a century, an Injury to One is an Injury to All!

    Event for Afghanistan Feb2026 (1)

    Event for Afghanistan Feb2026 (2)

    Event for Afghanistan Feb2026 (4)

    Event for Afghanistan Feb2026 (3)

    Event for Afghanistan Feb2026 (5)

  • The Truth About Working at Pieto: Exploitation of Horrific Proportions! (En & Ελ)

The Truth About Working at Pieto: Exploitation of Horrific Proportions! (En & Ελ)

It seems that Pieto’s boss continues to over-exploit and abuse his employees. We have received the following complaint, which we publish with all reservations, and we call on the competent authorities to conduct the necessary investigations.

“I am a former employee of Pieto Café (207 Ledras, 1011, Nicosia, 22 664020). I worked for a total of 17 days, from August 1 to August 17, 2025 as a waiter, and although the period during which I worked was short-term, it was equally hard and endless. With this letter I would like to share my experiences. I would like to inform you that reports of very serious and multi-level violations of labor and insurance legislation, as well as personal data protection regulations (GDPR) will follow.

Starting with the labor and insurance violations, very briefly the employer, Antonis Koupparis:

    • never informed me in writing about my employment terms.
    • assigned me additional duties than those agreed upon (greeter, bar etc.).
    • he forced me to work nine hours (9h) continuously (with only the few minutes of paid break provided for by law), on a six-day basis – my senior colleagues are forced to work up to 11 hours non-stop.
    • he did not pay the mandatory extra payment for overtime, nor for the work on August 15.
    • when after my resignation he paid my salary (with a long delay), he deducted 60 euros without reason or cause.
    • he did not declare me to the Social Insurance, and yet he deducted the relevant contribution from my salary.

For the above, the relevant complaint has been made to the Labor Relations and and to the Social Insurance, demanding that I be paid all the accrued wages. It is also worth mentioning that the employer did not give his employees the mandatory service right, nor a professional booklet, as required by law.

The mistreatment in this company is not limited to violations of the law. In addition to the exhausting work schedules, employees often receive insulting and aggressive behavior from the employer and the store manager. The perpetuation of this situation is due to the fact that the majority of employees are immigrants with uncertain status, who do not speak Greek well and have limited knowledge of their rights, working under these inhumane conditions while afraid to protest.

A shocking example of humiliation, which is also a serious violation of personal data protection laws (GDPR), is the fact that the store’s cameras RECORD EMPLOYEES AND CUSTOMERS WITH AUDIO, without consent or prior notification. Even worse, the employer has the perverse need to share this material (video excerpts or screenshots) in chats that maintains a Facebook conversation with all employees, without any permission, either to mock or to point out their slightest mistake. I have filed relevant complaints with the Office of the Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights accordingly.”

    General Strike 2025
    A chowder of striking sabotabbies!

On Thursday 11/9, wobblies in Cyprus joined the thousands of striking workers protesting in Nicosia, for the Cost of Living Adjustment. Strike protests with hundreds of strikers were organised in every city of south Cyprus, with IWW members participating in those in Limassol, Larnaca and Paralimni as well.

The Cost of Living Adjustment (CoLA) is an annual wage adjustment based on inflation to ensure that as prices rise, workers’ wages also increase. About half of workers in Cyprus (public sector and where collective agreements exist) receive this “breather”, which was hard-won in the 1940s.

    General Strike 2025
CoLA – (Bosses and Government) Respect the Agreements!

CoLA is now attributed to 66.7% of inflation (100% until the crisis years of 2013-2018 during which it was frozen, 50% between 2017 – 2022). Despite what was agreed in 2017, bosses and the government sought its abolition in 2022, but the first general strike in the country’s history ultimately led to an increase in the rate! The 2022 agreement included the obligation to restore CoLA to its original philosophy by June this year. But as employers and the government are still unwilling to honour the agreement, the majority of trade unions organised another general strike, aiming to increase the CoLA to 100%, include it in the minimum wage, and convert multi-employer agreements into legally binding regular sectoral agreements. This could increase the number of workers receiving CoLA from almost 50% to 80-90% of the workforce!

Struggles, including strikes, obviously have their risks, but it is only with struggles that we have won and that we will protect our minimal workers’ rights! From the 30s and 40s until today, nothing has been gifted to us and nothing will be gifted to us!

Urgent Call: Help Fight a Horrific Assault to Refugee Status!

End the Deportation of Abed* & Friends and Appeal Against this Racist Mass Deportation of Asylum Seekers.

On June 30, 2025, at least 15 asylum seekers from Afghanistan were notified that their applications had been rejected. This mass rejection appears to signal a de facto reclassification of Afghanistan as a “safe” country for the first time since its reoccupation by Taliban forces. It marks a further tightening of the asylum process, in line with the policies of the Republic of Cyprus, whose government takes pride in its harsh deportation record and treats condemnation by the European Court of Human Rights as a badge of honour.

Abed (*a pseudonym, for safety reasons) is a fellow worker in Cyprus and an active member of the solidarity union IWW (Industrial Workers of the World), where he has been organising for over a year. While struggling to survive himself, Abed has consistently stood up for the rights of workers from many countries, including Cyprus. He also has a history of defending workers’ rights in Afghanistan and has been targeted by the Taliban, one of the key reasons he applied for asylum after the Taliban’s return to power. His family continues to alert him to the real and immediate danger he would face if deported.

In response to this threat, Abed has not only decided to fight for his own right to remain, but has also reached out to other Afghans in Cyprus facing this racist mass deportation. Together, they are preparing to file appeals by the deadline of the end of July 2025. Each appeal costs between €1,000 and €2,000. While this is a staggering amount, the good news is that it doesn’t have to be paid in full upfront, giving them a window of time to seek legal aid and gather the necessary funds.

Right now, however, they must pay a portion of these costs to initiate the appeal process – before the end of July – or risk immediate deportation.

We believe there is a strong chance Abed and his fellow asylum seekers can win their appeals. Until now, Afghan nationals have generally been granted asylum in Cyprus, making this new wave of rejections unprecedented. It appears to be a test case, to see if there will be any resistance. We also believe the state may be hoping to retain the appearance of legality by granting asylum only to those who appeal, while quietly deporting those who cannot afford to.

In the face of state violence and systemic injustice, our only real source of protection is one another. That’s why IWW Cyprus is organising this fundraiser: to help begin to cover the legal costs of these urgent appeals and give Abed and friends a chance. In this case, the fight against injustice is literally a matter of life and death. Every contribution helps while we continue to pursue all available avenues of support.
